フランスの建築家・デザイナー Philippe Starck（フィリップ・スタルク）によって、スペインの Disform（ディスフォーム）社のために 1978年にデザインされた 'Pepper Young' コーヒーテーブル。

4本の金属脚で構成され、各脚の上部には成形ポリウレタン製の球体が取り付けられています。
球体はガラス天板の滑り止めとして機能し、軽やかな構造に安定性をもたらすディテールとなっています。

名称は1930年代のアメリカのラジオ番組のキャラクターに由来。

スタルクは「人は天才になる義務はないが、誰もが参加する義務を負っている。あらゆる作品は、できるだけ多くの人々の生活をより良くするために存在しなければならない」と述べています。
こうした思想を背景に、常に最小限で最大限を生み出すことを追求し、持続可能な脱成長へのアプローチを体現し続けています。

フランス出身の国際的な建築家・デザイナー。
建築家として大統領私有のアパート設計などを担う一方、デザイナーとしては日用品の歯ブラシからオリンピックの聖火にいたるまで、あらゆるジャンルのデザインを手掛けています。
日本では、アサヒビール社の金色のオブジェが有名で、1990年代にはセブイレブンの文房具などもデザイン。

そんな彼は、航空機設計者であった父に影響を受け、幼い頃から物作りに熱中していました。

1968年に美術学校を卒業し自身の事務所を設立すると、翌年にピエール・カルダンの会社でアートディレクターに就任します。4年間という短い期間でしたが、インテリアデザインを担当し、この頃からプロダクトデザインに対する頭角を現します。

1983年には、フランスの文化大臣であったジャック・ラングの推薦で、当時のフランス大統領フランソワ・ミッテラン氏の私有アパートを改修する計画にスタルクが選出。これが彼の転機となり、瞬く間にフィリップ・スタルクの名が世界に広がっていきました。

スタルクのデザインは、あまりにも多くのスタイル、歴史的背景が組み合わさり、我々の想像を常に超えていきます。彼の物作りに対する姿勢はプロダクトだけでなく、それを実際に使用する人も意識しており、 実際に「人々に夢、愛、優しさ、詩、そして幸福を売ることに興味がある」と語っています。

世界的に有名なチャールズ・イームズのシェルチェア、アルネ・ヤコブセンのセブンチェア、エーロ・サーリネンのチューリップチェアの3脚を合作させたマスターズチェアは、彼のユニークな一面が感じ取れるプロダクトの一つです。

2023年のミラノサローネではディオールとの共同で椅子をデザインするなど、未だ最前線で活躍するフィリップ・スタルク。彼のデザインは私たちの豊かな感情に寄り添い、デザインの楽しさを色々な角度から教えてくれます。
